In ergodic situations, the average outcome describes what happens to you over time. In non-ergodic situations, it does not. Many strategies that look attractive in terms of expected value are non-ergodic: they expose you to small gains most of the time and catastrophic losses rarely. Aggregated over time, those rare losses dominate the outcome.
